The Field Book Project's overall mission is to create one online location for scholars and others to visit when searching for field books and other field research materials. Funded by the Council for Library and Information Resources (CLIR), the Project is a joint initiative between the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution Archives

Conservation efforts for the field books are being supported in part by a Save America's Treasures grant administered by the National Park Service and National Trust for Historic Preservation

Generous funds from the Smithsonian Women's Committee supports field book digitization, which is a crucial step to increasing the accessibility of field book content and enhancing scholarship.
