Celebrating 100 Years at the National Museum of Natural History

Giant fossil sloths, microscopic pollens in amber, fragile pottery sherds, and ancient meteorites - 100 years ago this Museum opened to provide a home for such objects and a small group of curators, with labs for research, cases for storage, and dioramas for display.

Travel back with us to 1910 and through the years of Museum exploring, collecting, researching, and teaching. And contribute to our vision for the century ahead as we further probe into the questions of global warming, habitat loss, and changing societies.

This exhibition is dedicated to all the talented and committed people who have worked at the Museum since its opening 100 years ago.

Special thanks to the Smithsonian Institution Archives and Smithsonian Photographic Services for their concerted efforts in the development of this exhibition.

This section of the 100th Anniversary web site incorporates a small selection of images and information from the Celebrating 100 Years at the National Museum of Natural History temporary exhibition, which was on display from May 29, 2010 through March 2011 (second floor).

It cost $3.5 million to complete the original construction of the building.
