~ Neil Bagley ~
Neil
Bagley has had 24 years working in fisheries related fields primarily with
the old Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and lately, as a result of restructuring,
with NIWA. Of the 24 years, 18 years have been involved with seagoing duties
assessing fish stocks in New Zealand waters. This has included designing,
planning, running, analyzing and writing up trawl surveys, mainly involving
middle depths species found between 50-800 metres depth.
Lately Neil has also been involved with acoustic surveys including mark identification using trawls. Other areas Neil has been involved in are fish tagging to determine movements and growth and is part of a team studying fish distribution and community structures from trawl survey data collected from New Zealand waters, and advice on fishing methods.
Since arrival of the TANGAROA NIWA's new 70 metre research vessel in 1991, Neil has had responsibilities for the trawl gear used on standardised trawl surveys, ensuring a standard apporach to rigging, deployment and overseeing maintenance of research trawls.
