Giant squid have suction cups on their arms -- there are eight arms-- and on the ends of their tentacles. There are some stories, myths really, that say the suckers are as big as dinner plates, that they are really huge. But when scientists actually measure the diameter of these suction cups or suckers, we find that the largest size that we can record is about five to five-and-a-half centimeters. That's only a couple of inches in diameter. So they do not get huge. The point with the suckers is there are so many of them on their arms and on the tentacles that they are very effective weapons for capturing prey.
