If we were going to look for the best places to find giant squid, we would have to put together the pieces of information and data that we have gathered over the years. When we do that, we find the best places to go would be where a lot of these animals have been washed ashore, stranded on beaches, or where sperm whales congregate, because sperm whales eat all kinds of squid and especially giant squid when they get a chance, and also where these animals might be caught in deep-sea fishing nets.

When you analyze these data, a couple of places stand out as being high potential areas for finding living giant squid. One of those is in the Azores Islands, the islands off the coast of Portugal, and the other is another island nation, New Zealand, in the far southwestern Pacific. So these two places, I believe, are hot spots for giant squid, because they meet the criteria of where we believe giant squid are most abundant.
