Ants: Day Care for the Young
In this leaf cutter ant colony, the queen lays her eggs in the nursery gardens,
where adult worker ants care for and feed the larvae. Social insects such as
ants, termites, and some bees and wasps live in organized groups called colonies.
These colonies have been called "superorganisms." Each individual
can be compared to the cell of an organism, while groups of individuals that
specialize in a given task (such as rearing, foraging, gardening, or guarding)
can be compared to organs.
