A Virtual Tour of the NMNH: Life in the Ancient Seas
Trilobite

Paleozoic Era Trilobite

Paleozoic Era
570-230 million years ago

Distant relatives of insects and other animals with jointed legs, trilobites abounded in the ancient seas. These hard-bodied animals with antennae and compound eyes disappeared from the fossil record 230 million years ago, during the mass extinctions that ended the Paleozoic Era. The Museum's trilobite fossils range from marble-sized to the size of a manhole cover.
