Zuni artists use brushes made from yucca plant leaves to paint intricate designs
over a layer of white clay. The red glaze is made from yellow ochre, a mineral
pigment that turns red when fired. For 1,500 years, the Zuni of New Mexico have
built pottery with coils of clay, developing many designs and shapes suited
to different purposes. Contemporary Zuni artists now sell their work as fine
art.
