Black marlin leap, twist, turn on their tails, and torpedo through the ocean at speeds of up to 112 kph (69 mph). This magnificent, world-record, 708 kg (1,560 lb) black marlin was caught off Cabo Blanco, Peru, by Alfred C. Glassell, Jr., in 1953 and donated to the National Museum of Natural History. In this exhibit you will discover how Museum scientists study this species of fish--from the eggs, which measure just 1 mm (.039 in), to the full-grown adult.
