A Virtual Tour of the NMNH: Marine Ecosystems
Giant Squid

Museum Scientist Clyde Roper

Museum scientist Clyde Roper lies fingertips-to-tentacles with a giant squid. This specimen is 2.7 m (8.9 ft) long--not counting its long feeding tentacles, which were lost. Giant squid can grow up to 18 m (59 ft) long. No scientist has ever found a live giant squid in its natural environment. Therefore, everything we know about these animals comes from preserved specimens. That may soon change, however. In late 1997, Roper will set out to sea in search of the giant squid.
