Ovis canadensis
This peaceful scene shows only one side of life for bighorn sheep. During mating
season, the males fight, crashing and butting horns for a chance to mate with
one or more females. Strong neck and shoulder muscles and an extra-thick skull
absorb the impact of head-on collisions. Although once wide-ranging in western
North America, bighorn sheep are now mostly limited to high mountain ranges
or remote areas of southwestern deserts.
