Bengal Tiger

Panthera tigris
At the turn of the century, about 40,000 tigers roamed throughout the Indian subcontinent. Today, fewer than 3,750 tigers remain. Their survival is endangered as human development encroaches on tiger habitat. Furthermore, Chinese folk medicines utilize almost every part of the tiger's body, leading to widespread poaching of these animals. This particular Bengal tiger was shot in 1967 after it had killed several people. By nature, however, tigers are not man-eaters--they are solitary animals that prefer deer, their natural prey.
