Ursus arctos
Grizzly bears were once widespread in central and western North America. In
the last 150 years, both their range and numbers have declined. In the contiguous
48 states, grizzlies have been restricted to less than two percent of their
historic range and their numbers have fallen from about 100,000 to 1,000. Here,
a mother grizzly teaches her cubs to dig for ground squirrels, a staple food.
