Male African Hartebeest

Alcelaphus buselaphus
An alert male hartebeest stands atop an anthill, advertising his territory. Surrounded by flat-topped acacia trees, this herd is kept company by a resting straight-horned oryx. Hartebeest live in the grassy plains of the African savannah. Until the early decades of this century, vast herds of game--hartebeest, oryx, antelopes, and other ungulates--populated the savannahs. In most places, those herds have dwindled significantly.
