Long-eared bat (Lonchorina aurita)
Yellow winged bat (Lavia frons)
Horseshoe bat (Rhinolphus hildebrandti)
The leaflike noses and large ears of these bats serve similar purposes--they
use sound waves to help locate prey. Nose and ears work like a transmitter and
receiver. These bats emit calls from their noses. The shape of the nose helps
to focus the sound waves. The big ears detect the returning echoes, as well
as the sounds of prey, such as insects rustling in the leaves. Different-shaped
ears detect different frequencies of sound, helping each species locate its
preferred prey.
