A Virtual Tour of the NMNH: Ice Age Mammals
American Mastodon

Mammum Americanum

Mammut americanum
These huge beasts browsed in wooded areas of North America from coast to coast and from Alaska to central Mexico. They survived until about 10,000 years ago. Some mastodon remains have been found associated with fires, perhaps cooking fires set by humans to roast the meat of the mastodon.
