A Virtual Tour of the NMNH: Ice Age Mammals
Big Horned Bison

Bison Crassicornus

Bison crassicornus
Naturally freeze-dried, this 28,000-year-old mummy was found in Alaska in frozen muck. The cold caused complete dehydration, which preserved the animal's skin, tendons, horn sheaths, and hooves. Such preservation gives us a rare opportunity to see anatomical details such as ears and lips. The big horned bison lived between 40,000 and 15,000 years ago and was far heftier than its living descendants.
