A Virtual Tour of the NMNH: Fossil Plants
The Future Site of Washington, D.C.

125 Million Years Ago

125 million years ago
Although this scene looks similar to landscapes of today, dinosaurs may be hidden in the trees. You are looking at the flood plain of a river that flowed near where the Potomac is today. Flowering plants, such as the shrubby growth near the channel, were just beginning to play a role in the Earth's vegetation. However, the more primitive conifers, or gymnosperms (meaning "naked seeds") were still dominant.
