A Virtual Tour of the NMNH: Fossil Plants
Fossil Flowers

Green River Formation, Colorado

Green River Formation, Colorado
This 50-million-year-old fossil flower, preserved in shale, looks as if it might have been pressed yesterday. When it lived, flowering plants had already come to dominate Earth's vegetation. They owed their success in part to animals, most notably insects, that pollinated the plants while flying from flower to flower in search of food.
