Ediacara Hills, Australia
570-543 million years ago
Jellyfish and frondlike animals--probably related to sea anemones--are among
the soft-bodied creatures modeled in this diorama. The models are based on fossils
found in Australia's Ediacara Hills. These fossils represent indisputable evidence
of multicelled life between 570 and 543 million years ago--just before the evolutionary
explosion of animals recorded by the Burgess Shale fossils.
