Western Australia
About 3.5 billion years ago, a colony of microbes--either blue-green algae or
bacteria--trapped layers of sediments to form this stromatolite. The sediment
layers are clearly visible in this cross-section. Scientists have recovered
preserved microbes from stromatolites, providing the oldest evidence of life.
