Aptenodytes forsteri
Pygoscelis adeliae
Emperor and adelie penguins are well adapted to Antarctica's extreme cold. These
birds have built-in layers of insulation: Their scale-like outer feathers cover
a thick inner layer of down, and blubber lies just below the skin. Chicks have
an even thicker coat of down, which appears to triple their size. Except for
an occasional seal and human visitors from the north, birds are the only warm-blooded
inhabitants of the Antarctic interior.
