Rhinoceros Hornbill

Rhinoceros Hornbill

This exhibition is closed.

Buceros rhinoceros
Using mud, a male rhinoceros hornbill walls his mate inside her nest for protection. In this diorama of a Borneo rainforest, he uses his long beak to pass insects and fruits to mate and offspring. They will remain walled inside until the young are ready to fly. Then the female will use her beak to break through the mud walls.
