For purposes of categorization, the entire species is listed under the most severe status among its subgroups. Thus, the brown bear, Ursus arctos, appears in the list of extinct animals, not because the species as whole is Extinct, but because the Mexican subspecies is Extinct. For some species, as many as 5 or more subgroups have various levels of concern. If no conservation status is noted, the species still may be under the watchful eye of the IUCN, but data are not sufficient to determine whether there is a concern.
