| Mountain Pocket Gophers live in meadows, pastures, and rocky slopes, in pine, fir, spruce, and hemlock forests at elevations above 1,545 m. They are active all year, and like other pocket gophers, they are solitary. Their burrows do not interconnect. Between 10 and 30 adults typically live in one hectare. Pocket gophers have an important impact on soils, moving many tons of it to the surface annually as they tunnel. Their work mixes the soil and aerates it, and creates new sites for colonization by plants.
