| The Mt. Lyell Shrew occurs only in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains of California and is found only at elevations above 2,000 m. Nothing is known of its life history. Closely related to the Cinereus Shrew, this species may have evolved from a population of shrews left behind on an ecological "island" when the range of the ancestral population moved northward following the last Ice Age.
