A sea of grass billows in the winds that sweep across the heart of Asia. Cut off from moist ocean breezes, these grasslands and foothills endure extreme summer temperatures, long winters, and erratic rainfall. Nonetheless, a remarkable array of grass-eating mammals survives here. Many larger ones migrate year-round in search of better pastures.
