Box Panels:

LOCATION: Karluk 1 archaeological site, Kodiak Island, A.D. 1400-1700

REFERENCE: Alutiiq Museum (AM 193-95-853)

DIMENSIONS: larger panel 11 cm wide.

DESCRIPTION:
These painted panels are from a small box that is 250 - 600 years old. The circular designs may show the sky worlds that were believed to surround the earth. One traditional story told about the stars, who were one-eyed men who looked down from the first sky. The sky worlds were also shown by rings that go around masks. The face at the center of these designs may be Lam Sua, the "person" of the universe.
