Musket Lock:

LOCATION: Karluk 1 archaeological site, Kodiak Island, late 1700s

REFERENCE: Alutiiq Museum, Koniag, Inc., Collection (UA84.195)

DIMENSIONS: 16 cm long.

DESCRIPTION:
Russian frontiersmen (promyshlenniki) did little hunting for sea otters themselves. Their guns frightened away the animals, unlike the silent arrows and darts used by Native hunters. Rain and sea salt ruined most guns after a few years of use. This rusted part is from an old flintlock musket.
