Woody Island Baptist Mission calendar (1899). Woody Island, opposite the city of Kodiak, was home to the Kodiak Baptist Mission from 1893 until the late 1930s. Baptist missionaries opposed the Russian Orthodox Church, and provided Alutiiq children with a non-Orthodox upbringing. Some children at the Mission’s orphanage had lost their parents to epidemics.
