Masks - More Info - Where From

Alutiiq masks from the Karluk 1 archaeological site on Kodiak Island are similar to Yup’ik masks from farther north, one of many discoveries that suggest a link between Alutiiq and Yup’ik cultures. The owl (mask on left) was one of the spirit-helpers who assisted shamans. Birds appear on many Alutiiq masks and carvings, and play an important role in oral traditions.
