Suqaq / Seal stomach container. “They’d hang it up and put anything inside, any kind of berries they used, and put seal oil in there, to keep the berries from getting spoiled” (Mary Peterson, Kodiak Island Elder, 1997). Until the mid-1900s, people stored food in dried seal stomachs that were hung from the ceilings of their houses. Berries, lily tubers, dried fish, fish eggs, or blubber might be put inside with seal oil, which acted as a preservative.
