Hunting Hat - More Info - Where From
Caguyaq / Bentwood hunting hat. “These hats are highly prized and natives do not like to part with them. These hats are supposed to have the power of attracting sea otters, and by parting with the hat they also part with all luck in getting the animals” (William J. Fisher, 1883). This hat represents an animal’s head. Look for the mouth painted on the front of the brim; the long snout and nostrils; and crescent-shaped eyes. On the back of the hat are pointed ears carved from walrus ivory.
