This bentwood hunting hat is rich with symbols of animal spirits and ancestors. The ivory side panels and painted spirals signify mythical birds that could swoop down to pluck whales from the ocean. Rows of killer whale teeth are painted along the bottom. The seated ivory man on the front of the hat is “a place for my father or grandfather to sit and watch and be joyful,” says artist Jacob Simeonoff.
