Georg Steller, a naturalist with the Vitus Bering expedition for Russia in 1741, compared Chugach Alutiiq boxes to similar boxes made by Native peoples in eastern Siberia. He concluded that the ancestors of Alutiiq people must have originally come from Siberia, a view that anthropologists hold today.
