Kayak Prow - More Info - Where From

This wooden prow went at the front end of a kayak. The late Elder Larry Matfay learned the art of kayak building from his father, Sava, who learned from his own father Kejok. Kejok carved this kayak prow in the late 1800s. Mr. Matfay rescued it from his old home in Old Harbor after the great 1964 earthquake caused a tidal wave that washed away much of the village.
