Slitsnails are capable of releasing large quantities of this milky white substance in response to being disturbed. Almost all the specimens collected had repaired shells. The likely, yet unobserved, explanation is that crabs trying to get at the snails are unsuccessful, perhaps thwarted by this impressive substance.
