CCI image of jade

Polished section of a jadeite. By precisely controlling the beam energy and gas pressure in the ESEM, we can generate an image whereby contrast is related to charge differences on the surface of the sample rather than topographical differences. This imaging technique is called Charge Contrast Imaging. In this case, the crystalline structure and zoning can be observed in micro detail. This phenomena is unique to ESEM and not well understood. The bright triangle measures about 200 µm on the long axis.
