Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina)
LeConte Glacier, Alaska, USA
by Tom and Pat Leeson, Vancouver, Washington, USA
Harbor seals are found along the Pacific coast of
North America, from the Pribilof Islands to Baja
California, Mexico. Harbor seals generate a
greater amount of body heat than comparable
land mammals due to their higher metabolic
rate. Their thick layer of blubber prevents heat
loss, and can be drawn upon for energy as well.
