“One afternoon while I was on a Lindblad
Photography Expedition, a pod of perhaps
30 orcas
swam past our ship as it idled. Because the whales
typically make several brief
surfacings before taking
a longer dive, it is possible to anticipate the location
of an
individual’s next breath and focus the camera
there. On this occasion I witnessed
three whales
unexpectedly surface together.”
