LION CUB

Moremi Wildlife Reserve, Okavango Delta, Botswana

by Conor Lachlan Myhrvold, age 17

Belleview, Washington, USA

“This curious lion cub was hidden among the trees and bushes with other cubs while the mother lioness was presumably hunting. Since the cubs were so young and isolated in a remote part of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, it was likely that this was the first time they had encountered humans or vehicles.

“It was difficult to a get a picture of the cubs due to the dense cover of vegetation. Fortunately, we were able to maneuver our vehicle so I could frame the cub at an ideal angle, where he would be illuminated by the setting sun. The sensor of my Nikon D2X magnifies focal lengths by 1.5x, so my 600mm lens became equivalent to a 900mm. Without the added focal length this shot would not have been possible.”

Nikon D2X; 600mm lens; 1/50 sec at f/5.6; digital capture at ISO 200; Gitzo tripod and head.
