BABY GORILLA
Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
by Cameron Amadeus Myhrvold, age 17
Belleview, Washington, USA
“The Virunga volcanoes are covered in trees and shrouded in clouds. It is a steep, muddy climb to the habitat where the gorillas live. I overcame the low light conditions by shooting wide-open, at f/5.6, and setting the ISO rating to 800. I also used a monopod to stabilize the camera. Mountain gorillas are one of the most endangered species in the world with less than 700 remaining in the wild.”
Canon EOS 1Ds; 100-400mm lens; 1/40 sec at f/5.6; digital capture at ISO 800; monopod.
