GREAT HORNED OWLS
Mossleigh, Alberta, Canada
by Peter A. Dettling
Canmore, Alberta, Canada
“This shot was taken just as the last rays of light warmed the side of an old grain elevator with two great horned owls perched in the broken windows, getting ready for the night’s hunt.
“The window was very high up, requiring me to use my 500mm lens, which on my Canon EOS 1D Mark II converts to a 650mm, adding extra reach. The light was fading fast so I pushed the ISO up to 800, but was still shooting at 1/30th of a second. I used a tripod for this image, plus a remote
control with mirror lock-up and the image stabilizer function on the lens. Incredibly, it turned out sharp!”
Canon EOS 1D Mark II; 500mm lens; 1/30 sec at f/8; digital capture at ISO 800; Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with Fobo Superball head.
