BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS
Transvaal, South Africa
by Tobias Bernhard
Whangarei, New Zealand
“Bottlenose dolphins often can be seen fishing in the surf. Here they are breaking out of an exceptionally big wave before it crashes into the cliffs. My challenge was composing the image while dodging the high surf and keeping my inflatable boat from becoming caught in the breakers. I made use of the high contrast between the dark cliffs, crest of the breakers, and the dolphins. By choosing the highest shutter speed possible I was able to freeze the action and black out the cliffs, creating a nearly black and white effect.”
