Spring migration. Reindeer are good swimmers but are often weakened by the long, hard winter. Military vessels assist them across the cold spring waters to the islands off Finnmark, at the northern tip of Norway, where they graze on summer pastures. In the late fall, they swim the seven-mile return with no assistance.
