Each reindeer is uniquely branded. The animals to be branded are separated from the main herd. The calves are moved to another site where they get a numbered tag on their backs. They are then returned to a fenced-in pen with the female reindeer. Once the calves have found their mothers, the owners know which calves are theirs.
