RARAMURIS

For the Rarámuris of southwestern Chihuahua, their elaborate Easter Week ceremonies conclude their annual festival cycle. The celebrations of different Rarámuri communities share several elements seen only during the Easter season. These include the use of plumed headdresses and the performance of special dances by men and boys to the accompaniment of drums and reed whistles. Women and girls figure prominently in processions in which religious images are carried along a route marked by small wooden crosses. These processions derive from the Catholic ritual of the Stations of the Cross, which commemorates events associated with Christ's crucifixion.
