Carnival scene

A scene from the Carnival festival of the Huastecan Nahuas. February 1993. Huautla, Hidalgo, Mexico.

MIXTECOS

To celebrate Easter, the Mixtecos of Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca, dramatize the biblical account of Christ's crucifixion. Scores of boys don hoods and paint themselves white and purple to play the role of Pharisees, a Jewish sect whose members are portrayed in the Bible as the enemies of Christ. Other boys represent the Apostles at a re-creation of the Last Supper, where they are served a feast of local fruits and vegetables. Men, dressed as Roman soldiers, guard a statue of Christ in a jail constructed of woven mats and escort it in processions through the town.

MIXTECOS
