MIXES

From May to November, the Mixes of San Juan Guichicovi, Oaxaca, celebrate festivals dedicated to several Catholic saints. Their November 11th festival honors St. Martin the Merciful. This saint is believed to offer protection against poverty because, according to Catholic tradition, he shared his cloak with Christ, who appeared to him as a beggar. In front of the main altar of a small chapel, they create a special altar for St. Martin, surrounded by gladiolas and other flowers provided by Mixe women. To petition the saint's favor, participants offer prayers and attach money to a cloth draped around his image.

MIXES
