Mexican Cycles
CHONTALES
During the festival for their patron St. Peter, the Chontales of San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca, re-enact events of their colonial history by taking the roles of Muhús and Turcos. Wearing black masks, the Muhús portray the native inhabitants who defend their lands from the seafaring Turcos, identified by their conical hats and yellow or brown masks. Given to comic, often burlesque behavior, the Muhús attempt to disrupt the Turcos' dances and other ritual activities, but the Turcos eventually vanquish them. The Turcos then simulate an execution by hoisting Muhús feet first up a pole that represents the mast of their ship.
CHONTALES
En el festival de su santo patrono San Pedro, los chontales de San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca, escenifican eventos ocurridos durante la colonia asumiendo los roles de Muhus y Turcos. Con máscaras negras, los Muhús representan a los habitantes indígenas que defienden sus tierras de los marineros Turcos, identificados por sombreros cónicos y máscaras de color café o amarillo. Mostrando un comportamiento cómico, los Muhús intentan interrumpir los bailes y otras actividades rituales de los Turcos, pero éstos al final los derrotan y simulan una ejecución, levantando a los Muhús de los pies en un poste que representa el mástil de su embarcación.
